Feminist Round-Up

Solidarity

Slacking on your feminist news-bingeing? No problem. We’re here to help. Here are a few things that have been going on in women’s lives around the world:

  • If you’ve been living under a rock, you might not have heard that Malala Yousafzai, the 17-year-old Pakistani education activist, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. While Ms. Yousafzai is a powerful force for change, it’s important to remember the conditions that surround her situation. What do you think?
  • An American Marine is suspected in the killing of transgender Phillipino woman Jennifer Laude. The lesbian and transgender communities have been active following the attack, demanding that the U.S. remove troops from the country.
  • At this years United Nations International Day of the Girl Child, the focus was on enfranchising adolescent girls to become active participants in creating a stronger future.
  • Women have been the targets of sexual assault in pro-democracy riots in Hong Kong. Amnesty International and other groups insist that women should be able to protest without fear of sexual abuse.
